Twin Cities: Events To Mark National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day

Events marking the ninth annual national Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day are planned this week in Minnesota.

A breakfast will be held from 8 to 10 a.m. Wednesday at Snelling Office Park’s Red River Room, 1645 Energy Park Drive, in St. Paul. An event sponsored by Turning Point, an African-American counseling and treatment organization, will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Friday at the Minneapolis Urban League, 2100 Plymouth Ave. N. in Minneapolis.

A “Know Your Status” event sponsored by social service organization Pillsbury House is scheduled from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday at 3501 Chicago Ave. S. in Minneapolis.

Minnesota’s African-American and African-born population continued to have higher rates of HIV and AIDS infection compared with whites in 2007. Statewide rates of infection for African-Americans were almost 13 times greater than whites, and rates for African-born residents were 28 to 40 times greater than whites.

There are currently 2,050 African-American and African-born people living with HIV in Minnesota.
